JACK TORRANCE’S IMPOSSIBLE BOOK
What’s the meaning of publishing a paper book today, considering that everybody can publish a book with a simple registration at one of the many online self publishing tools. You don’t need to be a talent or even have something interesting to write. Actually you may fill up six hundred pages with nonsense and pretend is the manuscript of a serial killer and, who knows, even sell some copies.
Edizioni Willoworld, inspired by this observation, decided to publish this “Impossible Book”. A fascinating project where the meaning lays beyond the words that are written. What’s the future of publishing? How will it change the writer’s profession? Which directions will the new trends of narration take?
Jack Torrance’s Impossible Book (the amazing character created by Stephen King and given life by Jack Nicholson) can now see the light. Kubrick gave his approval for the translation of the famous sentence typed endlessly by Jack Torrance, in the terrifying silence of the Overlook Hotel. We decided to bring back the original sentence and the four translations (French, Italian, German and Spanish) precisely 666 times for each language (German took twice the amount of pages).
I like to see this book as the project of extreme musicians, where the music is less important than the statement of the album’s concept. The meaning has to be found in the intention of writing down the same sentence for hundreds of times and be able to publish it; the provocation of a group of web-philosophic-researchers in the age of Internet 2.0.

IL LIBRO IMPOSSIBILE: Una Prefazione
Nell’era digitale dell’autopubblicazione e autocelebrazione dell’opera scritta, il significato di un’edizione cartacea viene completamente stravolto. Oggi tutti sono in grado di pubblicare un libro e venderlo on-line. Non c’è bisogno di fare corsi di scrittura creativa, né di avere talento. In realtà non è neanche necessario scrivere qualcosa di sensato. Potremmo estrarre parole a casaccio e impaginare un tomo di 600 pagine, mandarlo in stampa e presentarlo come il delirio di un serial killer. Probabilmente riusciremmo anche a venderne qualche copia.
Le Edizioni Willoworld, prendendo spunto da questa osservazione, pubblicano il “Libro Impossibile”, un intrigante progetto che ha il solo scopo di fare riflettere. Quale sarà il futuro dell’editoria? Come cambierà il mestiere dello scrittore? Che direzioni prenderanno le nuove tendenze della narrazione?
Il libro impossibile di Jack Torrance, immortalato prima dalla penna del maestro Stephen King, poi dalla faccia del magnifico Jack Nicholson, può oggi vedere la luce. Kubrick si occupò personalmente delle traduzioni della mitica frase “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, che il folle protagonista di Shining riproduce all’infinito con la sua macchina da scrivere, nel silenzio agghiacciante dell’Overlook Hotel. In queste 187 Pagine l’abbiamo riportata fedelmente nelle altre quattro lingue in cui avvenne il doppiaggio (francese, italiano, spagnolo e tedesco) e riprodotta esattamente 666 volte in ogni idioma (il tedesco ha occupato il doppio dello spazio).
Alla pari di un progetto discografico di musica estrema, questo libro non comunica il messaggio attraverso il suo contenuto. Il suo significato è prettamente rilegato nell’intenzione, nell’estro, nella follia che si nasconde dietro una moltitudine di pagine piene della stessa frase, e nella possibilità di rendere pubblico un oggetto del genere. Il libro impossibile è l’ennesima provocazione di un gruppo di ricerca creativa, nell’era di Internet 2.0.
